Tissue Procurement: Bovine cartilage is derived from the metacarpalphalangeal joint (“knuckle”) of 18 month old cows. Alternately cartilage can be harvested from the stifle joint (“knee”) or nasal septum for an additional procurement fee.

Monolayer Culture Processing: Harvested cartilage is treated with a sequential enzyme cocktail to isolate primary chondrocytes. The cells are counted and transferred to a flask or multi-well plate in 50/50 DMEM/F12 media supplemented with 10% FBS. The cells are maintained in a humidified incubator at 37oC and 5% CO2 for 48 hours to promote cell adhesion and then shipped with cold packs for overnight delivery.
